How to Report a Hit and Run

Hit and run is a serious crime and causes major injuries, often fatal, to pedestrians and other motorists. The more information about the suspected driver that can be given to law enforcement officials, the better.

Use these steps to learn how to accurately and quickly report a hit and run incident.

  • Observe everything that you witnessed during the time of the hit and run.

  • Pay attention to what the suspect was driving, including the car registration number and physical description.

  • You should note if there is any damage to the vehicle, the description of the driver, if there are any other occupants to the vehicle and their descriptions.

  • Offer aid to the victim and quickly assess their injuries before contacting authorities. If you know first aid, administer the aid they need. If you do not, get another bystander to help with the situation. If you are in a high traffic area, have someone direct traffic around the accident area.

  • Call 9-9-9. Give the operator all of the information you gathered and advise them on the condition of the victim. Follow any first aid guidance they give you to ensure the victim is getting all the help they can while you wait for emergency medical personnel to arrive.

  • Stay at the scene. You should stick around until emergency and law enforcement personnel arrives at the scene. You will need to fill out an incident report, attesting to what you witnessed and the information you remember about the suspect.

What should I do if I have witnessed a traffic accident?
If you have witnessed a traffic accident, you should come forward to help the Police in their investigations. This is especially if someone was injured or killed.
