Road Safety Tips

*Ensure your care is recently serviced.

*Plan the route you intend to take in advance and get sufficient rest.

*Pick the safest route possible as your vehicle will most likely be full

*Do not overload your vehicles

*Ensure there is enough space, child seats/ boosters and seatbelts.

*Check tyre condition, pressure and wear rate of your tyres.

*Underinflated tyres and overloaded vehicles are the leading causes of tyre failure.

*Vehicles with properly inflated tyres will benefit from reduced tyre wear, prolonged usage and better fuel consumption.

*Drivers travelling at higher speeds has less time to identify and stop in time.

*A 10% increase in average speed leads to a 21%, increase in all injuries a 33%, increase in fatal and severe injuries, and a 46% increase in fatal accident.

*Only 14.3% of Malaysians comply with the speed llimit on expressways.

*Tailgating often causes rear-end collisions which lead to various type of neck injury or whiplash.

*Vehicles need to stay two second behind the vehicles in front. At 60km/h, keep a distance of 33m between vehicles.

*Cars travelling at higher speeds need to keep further from the vehicles in front of them, and more when roads are wet.

*Driving at less than the recommended two-second rule means it is less likely a vehicles can stop in during a crash.

*Satistics show that 2, 853 accidents occured due to queue jumping.

*Don't ignore early warning signs such as yawning, poor concentration, tired eyes, restlessness, drowsiness, slow reactions, boredom and over steering

*Try to take short breaks at least every two hours

*Stop when are you tired or share driving.

* A power nap of only twenty minutes can boost energy levels.

*Avoid smoking as nicotine and carbon monoxide hamper night vision.

*Caffeine provides a quick, but short-lived spurt in alertness

*Drink water, eat fruit and healthy snacks instead.

 

*Only 65% of motorcyclists comply with the helmet regulation.

*If you decide use motorcycle for "balik kampung", please wear your safety helmet properly or use public transport as an alternative.

*Make sure that your safety helmet is SIRIM-approved.

*A driver is four times more likely to have an accident if he uses the mobile phone while driving.

*Even a hands-free kit can affect the driver's concentration.

*In a crash, unrestrained rear occupants increases the death risk of front passengers by nearly five times.

*Beating the red light increases the probability of a side-collision, resulting in severe injuries.

*Side collisions constitudted about 14.6% of fatal accidents in 2007, which lead to 936 deaths.
