KUALA LUMPUR: Those who sell non-Sirim approved helmets can be compounded up to RM300, said Malaysian Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh.He said the current Motorcycles (Safety Helmet) Rules 1973 had prohibition on sales of helmets which did not meet Sirim standards. “It is against the law. It is already in the current law that you cannot sell a non-Sirim approved helmet.
“The power we lack now is that we cannot confiscate,” he said after handing out 100 helmets during the Road Safety Campaign at the Gombak Toll Plaza here yesterday.
He added that he would meet the industry players on Feb 11 to “reason with them”.
“It’s already illegal, why would you want to sell illegal helmets?
“We know you want to make money, but you should be selling helmets which are compliant with the law,” he said.
When asked if the police could take action against those who were selling illegal helmets, he replied: “Yes, the police can come in. If there are any complaints, the police can investigate.”
It was earlier reported that the department was working to ban all non-Sirim approved motorcycle helmets in the market, which included the half-shell or “tortoise” helmets.
On another matter, he said that JKJR, Modenas and the Road Safety Marshal Club would be coming up with a Riders’ Survival Programme in March for motorcyclists to refresh their road skills.
“This will be a voluntary programme and it will be free of charge for all motorcyclists.
“The emphasis will be on skills and practical training,” he said, adding that they needed about 300 to 500 motorcyclists for the programme
