PUTRAJAYA, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- The Road Safety Department and the Road Safety Marshal Club will organise a road survival programme for motorcyclists in the Klang Valley on Sunday to train them to deal with road hazards such as tyre debris, potholes and more.
Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said the Rider Survival Programme, to be held at Wisma Perkeso in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, would ensure greater safety awareness and provide motorcyclists with the skills and knowledge to deal with unexpected hazards on the road.
"We will educate them to be not just motorcyclists and pillion riders but to go beyond that ... to give them experience and training on the rider survival training programme".
"We will train them how to ride with a flat tyre, how to ride with one of the brakes malfunctioning ... we will train them how to counter these problems. Effective braking will be one of the things to be taught".
"Part of the training will include slippery and uneven roads, in addition to the basic knowledge, visibility and such," he said.
Suret Singh has appealed to all motorcyclist clubs to send their representatives to the programme.
He said he planned to take the programme to all states, including Sabah and Sarawak, to provide Malaysians with a new mindset and awareness regarding their personal road survival skills.
"We want them to be able to think beforehand, to think like they are pilots, and provide them with the ability to handle hazardous situations and survive them.
"This programme will be conducted by experienced riders from all over Malaysia, not foreign experts as the road conditions and the weather here are different," he said.
The programme will include skills applicable to cornering, riding through hazards such as potholes and road debris, uneven roads, braking on sand, avoiding potholes and better balancing.
